Summer Running
Greetings Athletes, Coaches, Parents, Family, Friends. Happy Fourth of July to all of you!
Summer is upon us. In my opinion it is a great time to keep reading. A classic book about sports, written by Kenny Moore, is a biography called 'Bowerman and the Men of Oregon'. Bill Bowerman was a legendary collegiate and Olympic coach who, in the 1960's, took a trip to New Zealand to coach and learn from another renaissance and world renowned coach named Arthur Lydiard. Upon returning to the United States, Bowerman performed a scientific study of exercise which required the participants of various ages to run in 'jogging' groups.
He noticed something of the new athletes who started to run some miles; "Almost without exception, they began to feel more tigerish."
As for the other health benefits from exericse such as running, Bowerman recalled what he had heard in New Zealand; "To procrastinators who complain that they cannot afford the time, I echo the words of Arthur Lydiard, 'you cannot afford not to take the time'".
Enclosed is the practice schedule for weeks 1-4 of the upcoming season. As always, it is subject to change so please stay in touch with either Coach Fisher or Coach Kersey, or check the website. It is unlikely that you can make every last practice or even the road race through downtown minneapolis. That is okay. Let a coach know so that you can know what to do on your own 'oyo'. Remember to turn in your fees, MSHSL forms, and physicals to the high school's main office.
Summer running is fun because we will work hard in a relaxed atmosphere. There are not too many students on campus right now. I am excited to start working with you again. I hope you are ready and excited for cross country. You too, will feel more tigerish.
Sincerely,
Tim Kersey
